BTS’s record label Big Hit Music confirmed on Monday, October 17th, that the band will be on hiatus as all seven members of the K-pop group will soon start their mandatory military service. All able-bodied men are to serve at least 18 months in the armed forces by the age of 28 due to ongoing threats from North Korea. The label told fans that the group will reconvene three years down the road in 2025.

Big Hit Music tweeted: “After the phenomenal concert to support Busan’s bid for the World Expo 2030, and as each individual embarks on solo endeavors, it’s the perfect time and the members of BTS are honored to serve. Since the creation of BTS over ten years ago, the band has risen to international success, broken records, and catapulted K-Pop into the global stratosphere. BIGHIT MUSIC has focused to the milestone moment when it would be possible to respect the needs of the country and for these healthy young men to serve with their countrymen, and that’s now.”

BTS’s oldest member, Jin, is expected to start the process at the end of October. Big Hit Music’s statement continued: “Group member Jin will initiate the process as soon as his schedule for his solo release is concluded at the end of October. He will then follow the enlistment procedure of the Korean government. Other members of the group plan to carry out their military service based on their own individual plans. Both the company and the members of BTS are looking forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment.”

shutterstock_2197808719

Sydney Sweeney is set to star in a new “Barbarella” movie for Sony Pictures. Adapted from French writer and illustrator Jean-Claude Forest’s comic series and directed by Roger Vadim, the original 1968 “Barbarella” starred Jane Fonda as the space-traveling heroine. The film has garnered ‘cult film’ status over the years, with Barbarella widely seen as one of Fonda’s most iconic on-screen roles.

The new project for Sony is in early development, with no director, producer or writer currently attached; however Sweeney seemed to confirm the project through an Instagram post, sharing an image of original artwork from the original 1968 film with a caption: “time to save the universe.”

Sweeney has a slate of projects lined up with Sony Pictures — she is co-starring alongside Dakota Johnson in the Marvel Comics adaptation “Madame Web,” and will star in “The Registration,” an adaptation of Madison Lawson’s thriller of the same name. Additionally, Sweeney’s acclaimed performances in the first season of HBO’s comedy series “The White Lotus” and the network’s “Euphoria” earned her two Emmy nominations for both programs.

Freevee, the streaming service backed by Amazon, has ordered a pilot for Jessica Simpson’s memoir, ‘Open Book.’  The half-hour scripted comedy will star singer/songwriter/actress Katelyn Tarver, and Fuller House’s John Stamos.

Open Book is described as ‘a propulsive, music-soaked coming-of-age story that is inspired by Jessica Simpson’s best-selling memoir.’  The show follows pop star Sadie Sparrow (Tarver) from her mid-20s rise from ingenue to mogul, introducing viewers to the family, friends and lovers she collects along the way.  Stamos will play Butch Thorn, a divorced former singer-songwriter and alcoholic with self-destructive tendencies who is attracted to Sadie, making things awkward when he realizes she’s the young pop star he’s been hired  to write songs with.

Simpson’s memoir sold half a million copies and was the highest-grossing memoir from a female entertainment personality in history at the time of its debut.  In 2020, Simpson signed a multimedia rights deal with Amazon which also included a series of short stories published by Amazon Original Stories. The next project from that deal — ‘Movie Star: They Always Say They’re Single — A True Story ‘— will debut in February.

Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Silk Sonic withdraw album from 2023 Grammy Award consideration

shutterstock_15530958471

Silk Sonic, featuring Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, will not submit their critically acclaimed album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, for 2023 Grammy Award consideration.

Mars issued a statement to Rolling Stone: “We truly put our all on this record, but Silk Sonic would like to gracefully, humbly and most importantly, sexually, bow out of submitting our album this year. We hope we can celebrate with everyone on a great year of music and partake in the party. Thank you for letting Silk Sonic thrive  … Andy and I, and everyone that worked on this project, won the moment the world responded to ‘Leave The Door Open.’ Everything else was just icing on the cake. We thank the Grammys for allowing us to perform on their platform — not once but twice — and awarding us at last year’s ceremony. We’d be crazy to ask for anything more. Thank you to everyone that supported this project and championed it.

Following the news, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. released a statement: “Silk Sonic has been such a fun highlight of our last couple of shows and they deservedly had an amazing night at the 64th Grammys earlier this year. We appreciate their decision not to submit this year but look forward to celebrating an amazing year in music together.”

At last year’s ceremony, Silk Sonic took home four Grammys for the album’s lead track, “Leave the Door Open,” which was released in April of last year. However, the album did not arrive until November of 2021, meaning it would have been eligible for the 2023 Grammy Awards. “Leave The Door Open” also became Silk Sonic’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending two non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 and 18 consecutive weeks in the top 10.
